Your email, and what we do with it
indians.nz is a free weekly email and website for Indian New Zealanders. This page explains, in plain English, what we collect and how you stay in control of it. It follows the New Zealand Privacy Act 2020.
Last updated 26 October 2026.
What we collect
Only what we need to send you the email. When you sign up we keep:
- Your email address.
- A record of your consent: the exact words you agreed to (“Yes, send me the indians.nz weekly email. I can unsubscribe any time.”), the date and time you agreed, which page you signed up on, and when you confirmed through the link we emailed you.
- A scrambled version of your IP address. We turn it into a one-way code (a keyed hash) before we store it, and never keep the address itself. We use it only to stop one connection from making lots of sign-ups, and delete it within two days.
For the weekly email, we don’t ask for your name, phone number or anything else. There are no ads, no tracking cookies and no analytics on this site.
Why we collect it
To send you the indians.nz weekly email you asked for, and to prove that you asked for it. New Zealand’s Unsolicited Electronic Messages Act requires us to keep a record of your consent. We don’t sell, rent or share your details with anyone for their own use.
Where it’s kept
We use three services to run the site. Each one handles your data only to do its job for us:
- Neon stores the sign-up list in a secure database.
- Resend delivers our emails, so it sees your email address and the messages we send you.
- Vercel hosts the website, and like any web host it briefly sees the IP address of each visit.
These companies may keep data on servers outside New Zealand, for example in the United States.
How to unsubscribe
Every email we send has an unsubscribe link at the bottom. One click and a confirmation, and you won’t get another email from us. Your email app’s own “unsubscribe” button works too.
After you unsubscribe we keep your email address, consent record and unsubscribe date, so we can show we followed the law and so we never email you again by mistake. If you’d rather we delete them, just ask.
Seeing, correcting or deleting your data
Reply to any email from indians.nz, or if you never got one, write to hello@indians.nz. Tell us what you’d like: a copy of what we hold about you, a correction, or for us to delete it. We’ll do it free of charge, and within 20 working days at the latest.
If you’re not happy with how we’ve handled your information, you can complain to the Office of the Privacy Commissioner.
If you register interest as a provider
If you fill in the provider form on indians.nz, we keep what you give us: your name, business name, category and email and, if you give them, your phone, licence number and areas served. We also keep the exact words you agreed to, the time you agreed, and a scrambled version of your IP address, which is deleted within two days.
We keep this to email you when provider listings open, and then to check your licence or registration on the public register. It isn’t published anywhere. It’s stored with the sign-up list in Neon.
Community Guide
Guide entries describe businesses and organisations, using public sources: OpenStreetMap, the Charities Register, businesses’ own websites, and other public web pages found by web search. Home-based businesses show their suburb only. To correct or remove an entry, email hello@indians.nz.
The “Nearest first” button uses your location only in your browser to sort the list; it is never sent to us.
If something goes wrong
If a privacy breach ever puts you at risk of serious harm, we’ll tell you and the Privacy Commissioner as soon as we can, as the Privacy Act requires.
